  • Toxic Tories virus street art and graffiti is in Shoreditch as lockdown continues and people observe the stay at home message in the capital on 12th May 2020 in London, England, United Kingdom. Coronavirus or Covid-19 is a new respiratory illness that has not previously been seen in humans. While much or Europe has been placed into lockdown, the UK government has now announced a slight relaxation of the stringent rules as part of their long term strategy, and in particular social distancing.

  • Looking down into a steep-sided valley, Distant streets and working-class terraced homes are beyond smoking chimneys from a Furnacite coking plant at Abercwmboi. Once known as the worst polluter in Britain it was owned by the National Coal Board (NCB) and sold to the Welsh Development Asoociation (WDA) for £1 Pound though arguments are still raging about how to clear it up and cleanup estimates range from £15-£20 million. The pollution had cruel effects on the local population. It made smokeless coal and locals joked that the plant took the smoke out and dumped it on the Cynon Valley but there was concern about toxic waste dumped in the village after the plant’s closure and some suffered birth defects. Ironically, the plant was closed because of environmental considerations.

  • A lone farmer drives his Ford tractor across the expanse of a green English field. Using wide arms mounted on the rear, chemicals reach out to cover a wide surface area, spraying what are possibly pesticides onto growing crops, the mechanised machine passes over the grasses of cereals that are thriving and maturing on this summer's day. The land rises up behind the farmer, a steeper escarpment of the landscape in the county of Kent - a fertile region of souther-eastern Britain, otherwise known as the Garden of England.

  • Oil refinery, owned by Exxon Mobil, is the second largest in the country on 28th February 2020 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, United States. Tens of thousands of people live within 2 miles of the complex, which produces gasoline for much of the East Coast. The petrochemical plants inside the complex make materials used in products such as diapers, chewing gum, tires and makeup. The state government gives Exxon permission to pump out millions of pounds of air pollution each year from its Baton Rouge complex. But because of accidents and leaks, from 2008 to 2011 the Exxon Mobil Baton Rouge complex put out nearly 4 million pounds of volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, without the governments approval.

Canals, lakes, backwaters and the sea make this natural harbour the ‘Queen of the Arabian Sea’ directly linked to the Kochi Lake in Perandoor. At a time when pandemic is wreaking havoc across all sectors, Kochi is staring at the threat of widespread e-coli contamination in its canals. Along with bacteria, the presence of toxic chemicals will impact the groundwater quality.

  • Having just unearthed more bodies from layers of volcanic ash and pumice, an archaeologist's assistant pauses for a cigarette, kneeling beside a victim of the AD79 eruption of Mount Versuvius over the ancient Roman town of Pompeii. Buried beneath huge amounts of toxic material this person was suffocated and crushed from falling debris. Preserved in a shell of volcanic material it is to be removed from this site on top of a villa roof where, it is calculated, this citizen was one of the last to die, having climbed 4 metres above ground level to await its fate. The Italian man ears a red t-shirt and holds a pick that has scraped and brushed away the soil to reveal the human form which also shows another body beneath. Others litter the rooftop too proving that many survivors of the first eruption perished after the second many hours later.

Pompeii was buried beneath metres of toxic material from Mount Versuvius in May AD79 and this person was suffocated then crushed from falling debris. Preserved in a shell of volcanic material it is to be examined for desease yielding clues as to its lifestyle and eating habits. The skeletal remains are clearly identifiable with spinal column vertibrae, one jaw still containing teeth and various pieces of bone have been recovered. Many bodies littered a rooftop here proving that many survivors of the first eruption perished after the second many hours later.

Fracking produces highly toxic waste. The blockade is a repsonse to the emmidiate drilling for shale gas, fracking, by the fracking company Quadrilla and part of an ongoing struggle where makeshift towers and makeshift camps have sprung up outside the premisses. Lancashire voted against permitting fracking but was over ruled by the conservative central Government. All the activists have been active in the struggle against fracking for years but this is their first direct action of peacefull protesting. Fracking is a highly contested way of extracting gas, it is risky to extract and damaging to the environment and is banned in parts of Europe . Lancashire has in the past experienced earth quakes blamed on fracking.
