  • Nun manhandles case up steps in Piazza San Marco, Venice, Italy. Having walked across the wide square in the heart of Venice, she hauls her bag up the steps and continues her journey in the narrow quiet streets where, in a few hours, the pavement swill be crowded with humanity as the influx of tourists who, in their own way, flood the narrow streets and smaller canals with gondolas. The light is soft and the air cool on this midsummer morning during a heatwave - the best time to be here.

  • Tourist crowd descend steps over a bridge near a church in Venice, Italy. Walking down the steps of a minor bridge, they are in front of the church of San Moise. The first church was built of wood in 797 and dedicated to San Vittore with the second in 947 by Moisè Venier and dedicated to his name saint (St Moses). This church was renovated after the second fire of 1105. Venice attracts 22-million visitors each year (for a city of only about 60,000 residents) while the cultural protection organisation, Italian Nostra, warns that Venice can only accommodate about 33,000 visitors per day but currently at least 60,000 daily.

  • Police moving in to re-capture the steps to the cathedral. The woman knows the police is about to tip her off her chair and down the steps.The London Stock Exchange was attempted occypied in solidarity with Occupy Wall in Street in New York and in protest againts the economic climate, blamed by many on the banks. Police managed to keep people away fro the Patornoster Sqaure and the Stcok Exchange and thousands of protestors stayid in St. Paul's Square, outside St Paul's Cathedral. Many camped getting ready to spend the night in the square.

  • Looking up from beach level, we see the steps and slightly rusting railings as seaside girls use the stairs to descend from the upper Kings Road level near the West Pier. The neglected iron-work is showing the rust from exposure to numerous  salt air and water storms over the years and is need of fresh paint to brighten this seaside resort. The two ladies chat as they come down and one licks an ice-cream cone, both happy on this warm spring day. Way above them, two other women are seated on chairs, overlooking the steps and the seaside beyond and an anonymous man stands with his back to us at the very top.

Tilbury became the only port in the Port of London Authority to serve cruise liners, when in 1916, it opened berths specifically for P&O. A large new passenger landing stage was constructed in the Thames with rail connections. Tilbury operated as Londons passenger liner terminal until the 1960s. For many people Tilbury was their point of emigration to Australia under an assisted passage scheme established and operated by the Australian Government.

Up until it was destroyed by Soviet leader Nikita Kruschev, the largest statue to Stalin in the entire Eastern Bloc was located here.
