  • The silhouettes of departing passengers are seen against the strong natural light from the vast windows that face outwards of this aviation hub. Some travellers await their flights sitting down in comfortable seating - one with his hands behind his head - while others pace about Terminal 5 at London's Heathrow Airport. The scene is fairly monochrome without colour other than a grey background on this overcast day. Terminal 5 has the capacity to serve around 30 million passengers a year. From writer Alain de Botton's book project "A Week at the Airport: A Heathrow Diary" (2009).

  • Sinister silhouettes in an underpass tunnel with walls covered with urban graffiti. The tunnel is located near Waterloo mainline station and the concrete bunker-like place has become a favourite landscape for dedicated street artists who are free to cover the walls and pavements (sidewalks) with expressions of their urban artistic ideology and political protest. In daytime, this environment is not as intimidating as it appears and Londoners pass through as a shortcut beneath an otherwise complex route of roadways and railway tracks above. There are also periodic festivals of street art attracting the best of artists including the secretive Banksy.

  • As an early sun rises, the twin stacks of Richborough cooling Towers make silhouettes against the golden morning light. Now decommissioned, these industrial giants of the landscape are sending clouds of steam vapour into the air, in the county of Kent. Nature can be seen competing with 20th Century technology as solar energy is seen against the war power being generated. From 1962-1971 Richborough burned coal from collieries. In 1971 the station was converted to burn oil. Too costly to run plant underwent trials on an experimental fuel called Orimulsion, a cheap heavy oil and water-based emulsion produced form natural bitumen from Venezuela. Initial results or trials suggested it would make a cheap clean fuel alternative to oil but high sulphur emissions from the plant caused nearby Acid Rain and after local protest, the site has since been derelict.

  • The fishing fleet of Tarbert on Scotland's Mull of Kintyre lies moored at the dock of this pretty coastal village in the Western Isles. Their colourful hulls shine in late afternoon sunshine as they are tied up awaiting another outing at sea to provide for this small fishing community a living and a livelihood for its families. But in the foreground sit a young couple whose prospects are not so positive: they rest on a bench in silhouette, one smoking a cigarette while turned to the friend who stares out to distant rolling hills. It is a scene of hopelessness that reflects modern life for the youth in remote communities where jobs are scarce and their futures far from secure. In an otherwise idyllic Scottish landscape, we guess at the disintegration of society up here - the scourge of economic downturn and future social problems.

  • We see four office workers silhouetted against the large orange wall of the Credit Lyonnais Bank at Broadgate in the City of London, UK. The two figures are reduced to black shapes and without detail that may identify them or their clothes, are hurrying in the same direction, carrying a bag or briefcase but the feeling of rushing business is seen and their scale is ambiguous because we don't know how close or far away they are from each other. This is due to telephoto lens foreshortening. Some therefore look giants and some appear tiny. Broadgate Estate is a large, 32 acre (129,000 m²) office and retail estate in the City of London, owned by British Land and managed by Broadgate Estates. It was originally built by Rosehaugh and was the largest office development in London until the arrival of Canary Wharf in the early 1990s.

  • The silhouetted figures of a woman and a small child, both wearing winter hats, pass by a permanently closed shop with signs in the foreground detailing its last day of trading on 24th February, 2022 in Leeds, United Kingdom. Economists have suggested that families across the United Kingdom could suffer the sharpest decline in their standards of living since the 1950s with household income potentially falling more than 3%, a result of the mounting price of global energy, and increasingly high rates of inflation in the country.

  • Visitors to the Roman Emperor Nero exhibition, The Man Behnd The Myth, read descriptions and learn about the Julio-Claudian dynasty of ancient Rome at the British Museum, on 26th September 2021, in London, England. Nero is known as one of Romes most infamous rulers, notorious for his cruelty, debauchery and madness. The last male descendant of the emperor Augustus, Nero succeeded to the throne in AD 54 aged just 16 and died a violent death at 30. His turbulent rule saw momentous events including the Great Fire of Rome, Boudiccas rebellion in Britain, the execution of his own mother and first wife, grand projects and extravagant excesses. Drawing on the latest research, this major exhibition questions the traditional narrative of the ruthless tyrant and eccentric performer, revealing a different Nero, a populist leader at a time of great change in Roman society.

  • Dawn light and silhouetted people with the Palaces of Westminster, Britain's parliament building on the far side of Westminster Bridge on the River Thames. Sinister figures can be seen on the steps leading down to the Embankment on the Southbank and on the bridge too. It is early morning on the south bank of the river and warm light shines on the Gothic architecture. The Palace, also known as the Houses of Parliament or Westminster Palace, is where the two Houses of the Parliament of the United Kingdom (the House of Lords and the House of Commons) conduct their business. It is therefore a potent symbol for British Governmental power, influence and a world-famous landmark for tourists. Big Ben is the name of the clock's bell and not the tower itself.

It is early evening and the crane drivers have left for the day, the day's shift have stopped work before resuming tomorrow. The silhouetted lines of each structure stand out clearly against the skyline before the regeneration of this region of East London grows upward. • Dark figures stand in silence to watch the crackling flames of a bonfire during the annual bonfire night on 5th November 2016, in Kington, Herefordshire, England. Bonfire night is an annual English tradition that takes across Engliand, especially in rural towns and villages such as Kington, a farming community on the English/Welsh border. The tradition is to light a bonfire with a guy on top historically, an effigy of Guy Fawkes, the Catholic plotter against King James 1, in 1605 although nowadays, the effigy can be of any hate character. This year, it was of Donald Trump - a few days before his shock election victory. Soon afterwards, the fireworks display was under way.

  • It is night-time on Blackpool's Golden Mile, the seaside resort in Lancashire, England. Like an English Las Vegas the neon lights glow to entice the holidaymaker inside where slot machines, games and rides await visitors to lose their vacation money. The Golden Mile is the name given to the stretch of Promenade between the North and South piers. It emerged in the late 19th Century, when small-time fairground operators, fortune-tellers, phrenologists and oyster bars set up in the front gardens of boarding houses, This northern seaside resort in the north-west of England is diverse in its transient holiday population whose behaviour can be routinely odd. Blackpool is the largest resort in the north of England and visited traditionally by working people from industrial towns and cities during the industrial revolution.

  • Typical Dolomites church architecture and graveyard ironwork in Leonhard-St Leonardo, a Dolomites village in the Badia region of south Tyrol, Italy. The church of San Leonardo and its Gothic tower was built between 1776 and 1778 by Franz Singer on a previous medieval building consecrated in 1347. South Tyrol is a very religious and traditional country. The weekly walk to Mass and the celebration of religious festivals and processions are part of the culture and tradition in South Tyrol. In almost every house you will find a cross on a corner with consecrated palm branches over there. Also in the stable there are consecrated palm branches to keep away every disaster. South Tyroleans are almost all Catholics and quite conservative. San Leonardo is in the municipality of Badia populated mostly by people who speak the ancient Ladin language.
