With the numbers of bus services listed vertically on the sign post, we look from a low angle, up at the information post, a blue efternoon sky and the rising spire of St Mary's, its shiny clock showing 5.30pm. A red London bus can be seen lower left too, en route to its destination elsewhere in the capital. TfL-sponsored operators run more than 500 services and the word bus is derived from the word Onmibus (the Latin for 'everyone').

Thousands of protesters occupied one of London’s most iconic landmarks on 9 October, in a last-ditch attempt to defeat legislation that is condemned by doctors as ‘undermining all that is precious about the NHS’. The anti-austerity direct action group demonstration blocked Westminster Bridge at 1pm on Sunday 9 October, days before the final vote in the House of Lords. The bill, which will see private patients treated at the expense of NHS patients, healthcare workers made redundant and reduce the priority of treating chronic and complex conditions, will be voted on by the Lords on the 12th October. The British Medical Association, the professional association of doctors in the UK, says the Bill “presents unacceptable risks to the NHS” and is calling for the Bill to be withdrawn.

  • Single telephone that is now only contact with local officers at closed East Dulwich police station, Lordship Lane. Graffiti has been scrawled on what was the main entrance doorway to the now vacant building on Lordship Lane, south London. As part of government economic austerity cuts, East Dulwich station has been closed and local crimes and law enforcement, dealt with at nearby Brixton and Peckham, some miles away. The community's anger to losing their local police is one example of how everyday hardships are being squeezed by the absence of healthy spending in the public sector, including the closures of libraries and many healthcare services.
