  • In fine, late-summer weather, an eleven year-old girl gingerly steps over a stile on the coastal path at Carregwastad Point, near Strumble Head, Pembrokeshire, Wales. Steadying herself with a walking pole, she climbs over wearing trainers rather than stout walking boots as this path is gentle for younger outdoor enthusiasts. The Pembrokeshire Coast Path is the first National Trail in Wales. Opened in 1970, the path is almost entirely contained within the boundaries of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park that takes in 17 Sites of Scientific Interest (SSSI), two nature reserves, and Wales' only marine nature reserve. The cliff tops offer wonderful expanses of wildflowers in Spring (April and May are best). Wide variety of birds nest along the cliffs, and grey seals can often be seen in the water below.

  • A person carries a bicycle wheel, minus its tyre, past a cycle path in central London. Seen from a low angle, the anonymous man holds the bike wheel in one hand before crossing the road near Holborn. Walking along the cycle path that is otherwise reserved for cyclists, he has walked over the cycle path arrow and bike stencil on the pavement. London is undergoing a massive building programme for dedicated cycle lanes where cyclists will enjoy more separation from traffic that has unfortunately lead to many collisions and deaths in the capital.

  • Ancient Bronze Age path and former drovers' route from Scotland to London, at Scotch Corner on the North Yorkshire moors. We look southwards downhill, a muddy lane on the edge of the North Yorks Moors National Park. For thousands of years, since the Bronze Age but more so in the last few centuries, the hooves of horses and sheep were transported along this path. Those treading the ground, helping to bring trade, spread news, introduce ideas and technology. Also known as Hambleton Street - or Via Regalis, after the Roman era - the footpath is now used by leisurely walkers on the Cleveland Way.

  • It is 07.45 on a dark, wintry morning and from behind, we follow a lone commuter who walks along a snow-covered path in Ruskin Park, an otherwise green space in the south London borough of Herne Hill, Lambeth. Street lights are still illuminating the road in the background and the blue light of early morning has fast becoming another day of snow showers and chilly temperatures. No grit or salt has been sprinkled on this slippery path and the person walks carefully carrying an umbrella from falling sleet which is soon to turn to rain as the temperature rises. Tall ash trees whose trunks form an avenue of cover and the commuter proceeds towards their neighbours to the station beyond. A single 4x4 car makes its way through this still quiet street with lights blazing.

  • High in the Nepali Himalayan foothills, an elderly woman is carried downhill by a relative for medical attention. On this mountain path that continues downhill to the nearest village, beyond which there is a road and transport to the nearest hospital, two men accompany the elder family member with overnight possessions. The old lady sits on a makeshift carrying chair that fits on to the back of a man who stoops under the weight of his human load. This area is known as the Annapurna Sanctuary in central Nepal, a popular trekking and adventure route to the highest Himalayan peaks. All transport to and from these regions is by mountain tracks like this and residents in the smallest villages travel on foot on by yak.
