  • We see six office workers silhouetted against the large orange wall of the Credit Lyonnais Bank. They rush to work while one figure stands and talks into his mobile phone, at Broadgate in the City of London, UK. Several figures who are also reduced to black shapes and without detail that may identify them or their clothes, are hurrying in different directions, carrying a bag or briefcase but the feeling of rushing business is seen and their scale is ambiguous becase we don't know how close or far away they are from each other. This is due to telephoto lens forshortening. Some therefore look giants and some appear tiny. Broadgate Estate is a large, 32 acre (129,000 m²) office and retail estate in the City of London, owned by British Land and managed by Broadgate Estates. It was originally built by Rosehaugh and was the largest office development in London until the arrival of Canary Wharf in the early 1990s.

  • Viewed from the top of the Arc de triumph in the centre of Paris, the French capital, we see tiny human figures going about their daily business, a hurried frenzy of activity at street level far below. This street is the Avenue des Champs Elysees, one of the most famous of European boulevards and the multi-lane road that stretches away into the distance – from l’Etoile to Place de la Concorde – is dissected with zebra crossings over which more pedestrians negotiate the Parisian traffic that has stopped on a red light. Otherwise small figures walk along the pavement (sidewalk) and some disappear into an underground Metro entrance.

  • A pair of awkwardly splayed legs disappear into the cold, murky waters of the Serpentine Lake in London's Hyde Park. Having just dived head-first off a platform that juts out into the lake, the person is half in and half out and the splash is frozen in time. He or she is in incopetent diver with such ungainly plunge into the waters. It is otherwise a quiet moment. The water is largely undisturbed apart from the dive and buoy markers float to for a boundary line to keep rowing boats and bathers apart. This bathing area is where the normally busy Serpentine Swimming Club have the use of this Royal lake known as Lansbury's Lido. It is now normally open only in the summer, but one traditional event occurs each year on New Year's Day, when the ice is broken and brave bathers dive into the cold waters of the lake. The Serpentine will be used for the swimming leg of the triathlon at the London 2012 Olympics. The Serpentine gets its name from its supposedly snakelike, curving shape. It was formed in 1730 when Queen Caroline, wife of George II, ordered the damming of the River Westbourne and other natural ponds in Hyde Park.

  • Reaching out to a tower of scaffolding, high above the skyline of North London, a member of a company of abseiling construction scaffold workers make use of circus skills. Suspended with ropes, carabinas and a seat harness normally used by mountaineers, this man is wearing a safety helmet and blue overalls and his dirty gloved hand is about to make contact with yellow iron work as his colleague looks skyward, already tethered to the reinforced structure. A 60s tower block is immediately behind and suburban houses and streets are below. We see a man about to make contact with a place of safety, reaching out to his destination while spread across London's skies. Lit by flash, this picture is confusing because the viewer sees a false sense of size and scale between the iron work and the flats behind.

  • A scarecrow guards crops and plants by a Gloucestershire country garden dry stone wall. The human figure has been made of straw and fabric, a cloth hat and the form of a blackbird on its head. It stands against the stone wall at the boundary of land in this Cotswold garden, near Cirencester. A scarecrow or hay-man is a decoy or mannequin in the shape of a human. It is usually dressed in old clothes and placed in open fields to discourage birds such as crows or sparrows from disturbing and feeding on recently cast seed and growing crops. As its name suggests, it scares away crows (and other species) from a field.

  • A full-scale mock-up of a multinational 50.5 meter-high European Space Agency's (ESA) Ariane 5 rocket is lit by floodlights in an early tropical evening at the main entrance to Guiana Space Centre, Kourou, French Guiana, South America. Glowing orange by the warm lighting, it makes an impressive model against the fading equatorial sky. Seen in scale, a lone human figure stands at the foot of the launcher that in reality, sends massive 8,000 kg payloads into orbit for a variety of communications and International Space Station purposes. Powered by Snecma-made Vulcain engines and boosted by Europropulsion solid motors, these rockets are launched from this facility on the Guiana coast. The building to the left are the CNES offices belong to the French Space Agency.

  • The solitary figure of a man stands on the roof of an office building in downtown Atlanta during a victory parade for the city's baseball team. The man may be a security guard, keeping watch over the streets below as crowds gather to honour the Atlanta Braves Baseball team, after their 1995 World Series win. The figure is in his manmade environment and the high walls and windows of the buildings that make up this metropolis dwarf this tiny human who in the scale and perspective of a modern city looks incongruous, isolated and insignificant.

  • We see four office workers silhouetted against the large orange wall of the Credit Lyonnais Bank at Broadgate in the City of London, UK. The two figures are reduced to black shapes and without detail that may identify them or their clothes, are hurrying in the same direction, carrying a bag or briefcase but the feeling of rushing business is seen and their scale is ambiguous because we don't know how close or far away they are from each other. This is due to telephoto lens foreshortening.

  • Window display figure of a traditional Chinese herbalist's shop in London's West End. The shadows of known cures such as anxiety, depression and hay fever are reflected on the body of this male miniature. One of Chinese herbology’s four natures is the degree of yin and yang, namely cold (extreme yin), cool, warm and hot (extreme yang). The patient's internal balance of yin and yang is taken into account when the herbs are selected. Medicinal herbs of "hot", yang nature are used when the person is thought to be suffering from internal cold that requires to be purged, or when the patient is believed to have a general cold constituency. Sometimes an ingredient is added to offset the extreme effect of one herb.
