  • As blue dawn light becomes another wintry day in south London, the glow of a car's brake lights shines through a covering of fresh snow. The driver has only swept the vehicle's back window with a rear wiper but with her foot on the brake pedal, she is about to set off on a drive to work this morning on roads that have controversially, not been gritted or salted by council highway workers. The surface is therefore still snowy in this residential area of Herne Hill, SE24, London and is a treacherous surface on which to maintain wheel and tyre (tire) traction and many accidents will result, including the heavy lorry (truck) which is about to climb this hill and which will soon prevent him from going much further.

Seen from down the street in the district known affectionately as South Pigalle (aka "SoPi") we see the glow of house lights in a room 3 or 4 floors up from street level. There is no-one home or nobody seen in the flat. It's late and the shutters are either open or closed in the blue light of a Parisien evening.

  • Vicksburg, Mississippi at dusk. This elegant historic town with its pillar fronted houses and cotton legacy is transformed as the remains of a storm at sunset turn the sky iridescent. There are perhaps defining moments on all big trips. Arriving in Vicksburg, Mississippi at dusk just as a huge thunderstorm was beginning to break was one of them. It had been raining so hard, that an alligator had mistook the four-lane Interstate for the swollen Mississippi beside it and tragically met its death there. But as we drew into elegant Vicksburg, with its pillar-fronted houses on hilly streets, something astonishing happened. The sky, the result of a hot, setting sun, and the remains of a storm, was suddenly alive with an iridescent glow, so otherworldly, it looked like a space ship had landed. A rainbow stretched between two red brick towers, and you could just hear hear a steamer's horn, as it edged its way down the mighty Mississippi.

  • A lone figure stands silhouetted against a hangar belonging to the elite 'Red Arrows', Britain's prestigious Royal Air Force aerobatic team at RAF Scampton, Lincolnshire. Two huge hangar doors are ajar revealing an orange glow spilling on to the concrete outside. A Hawk jet aircraft is parked awaiting overnight maintenance. Engineers talk inside as the door travels along its track. The men are the team's support ground crew and eleven trades are imported from some sixty that the RAF qualifies. The hangar dates to World War 2, housing Lancaster bombers of 617 Dambusters squadron who attacked the damns of the German Ruhr valley on 16th May 1943 using the Bouncing Bomb. This version of BAE Systems Hawks are low-tech, without computers nor fly-by-wire technology, Some of the team's aircraft are 25 years old and their airframes require frequent overhauls due.

  • High above the streets of Old Lisbon, we see a Portuguese lady leaning out of her window to hang out her washing on the line that is attached to her home's exterior wall in the Bairro Alto district - or Upper City - the oldest of Lisbon's residential quarters. Items of underwear, socks and other miscellaneous clothing have been strung out on the line that is now pegged along the crumbling wall's surface with faded, peeling plaster and paint. A TV aerial has also been fixed precariously by the window and it's shadow can be seen in the sunshine which is strong and side-lighting the scene which has a warm, morning glow about it. Lisbon's Bairro Alto quarter is located above Baixa and developed in the 16th Century. Suffering very little damage in the earthquake of 1755, it remains the area of most character and renowned for its residential and working quarter for craftsmen and shopkeepers. At night, life takes on a diferent personality when bars and up until the 60s, prostitution gave the district a bad reputation in the past but nowadays tourists and the chic frequent its streets and traditional 'Fado' (classical Portuguese opera) bars.

  • An ostrich chick stands alone in a private pen, beneath a heat lamp at the ostrich farm belonging to Robert and Nina Bailey near Chepstow, Wales. The reddish glow from the heat source concentrates life-giving energy into the young bird, helping it survive the first three months after hatching. Rearing these birds is a specialist and very expensive business but Ostrich meat is a South African delicacy, used for Biltong. Nutritionists promote it as a more healthy alternative because it is higher in protein and lower in fat and cholesterol. An ostrich lays an egg every other day, of which 40 to 80% are fertile. In the wild there is a 95% failure rate but using an incubator like this almost guarantees total success. Its latin name, 'Struthio camelus', is the largest of living birds with some males reaching a height of 8 ft (244 cm) and weighing 200 to 300 lb (90-135 kg). In the wild, the polygamous male has from two to six females in his flock. The cock scoops out a hollow for the eggs, which weigh nearly 3 lb (1.35 kg) each. One of the females incubates the eggs during the day, and the cock takes over at night. On the savannah they can run at 40mph (64 kph) for 10 hours though their top speed can reach 80mph. During the 19th-century vogue for ostrich plumes, farms were established in South Africa and later in North America, Australia, and Europe; after World War I fashions changed and the industry collapsed.

  • Canary Wharf tower seen from below, London Docklands, East London England. A pedestrian light shows both green for walk and red for don't walk while a street light that has just been illuminated starts to glow on the right. Blue light of the late day and an overcast sky makes the scene gloomy and slightly threatening. Canary Wharf is the product of the 1980s financial boom when during the office of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, huge building projects such as the Docklands consortium saw vast changes in London's landscape.

  • In heavy monsoonal rain, crowds gather at the stroke of midnight beneath umbrellas to witness the transfer of sovereignty of Hong Kong from the United Kingdom to the Peoples Republic of China (PRC), often referred to as "The Handover" on June 30, 1997. Midnight signified the end of British rule, and the transfer of legal and financial authority back to China. From the on the roof of Ocean Terminal shopping mall, the skyline is filled with fireworks but the glowing red comes from giant advertising lettering behind the viewer on the top floor of the building which protrudes out into Hong Kong harbour from the Kowloon side of the territory. Hong Kong was once known as 'fragrant harbour' (or Heung Keung) because of the smell of transported sandal wood.

  • Canary Wharf tower seen through a telephoto lens from across West India Docks, London Docklands, East London England. We see dozens of office windows illuminated by individual green ambient light and in some windows, office workers can be seen at their desks. It is late in the working day but feverish business continues into the night. There is a strong graphic feel to the image, relying on the blank, unlit windows where other employees of their companies have left earlier and switched off their lights to save electric power. Canary Wharf is the product of the 1980s financial boom when during the office of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, huge building projects such as the Docklands consortium saw vast changes in London's landscape.

  • The sun rises over the River Thames and City of London, the UK capital's financial heart. The solar power gathers in strength and intensity as it climbs from below the horizon and behind City buildings, its circular disc a flaming yellow which is soon to turn a deeper hue over the capital's orange skies at dawn. The tidal river is calm with only moored barges in the middle, used to secure other boats to their sides. The City wakes before another day of trading in the financial, banking and insurance institutions. The dome of St Paul's Cathedral is centre to the skyline.

  • The sun rises on a red sky in London's Docklands during a period of regeneration. The solar power gathers in strength and intensity as it climbs from below the horizon and behind buildings, its circular disc a flaming yellow which is soon to turn a deeper hue over the capital's red skies. A crane from a nearby construction project tells about the regeneration of London's East End during the early 1990s when the Thatcherite heyday in house and office building accelerated the demand for homes and headquarters during the economic boom.

  • In light monsoonal rain, a lone pedestrian is seen from a high viewpoint, crossing a zebra crossing with a yellow grid box junction to his right in Central Hong Kong on the last day of British rule. The junction is empty and without any traffic but the word 'Look' is stencilled in white letters for the benefit of unwary pedestrians. An umbrella used by the unrecognisable person is a colour match with the painted striped road markings, identical to the British highway traffic code. The transfer of sovereignty of Hong Kong from the United Kingdom to the Peoples Republic of China (PRC), often referred to as "The Handover" occurred at midnight on June 30, 1997, signifying the end of British rule, and the transfer of legal and financial authority back to China. Hong Kong was once known as 'fragrant harbour' (or Heung Keung) because of the smell of transported sandal wood.

  • Looking upwards through a gap in some trees, we see in the background the huge skyscraper office tower of the Commerzbank (Europe's tallest building (1997–2005), designed by Sir Norman Foster) and other institutions in the financial district of Frankfurt, Germany. In the foreground is a set of traffic lights with a traffic lane arrow direction sign and during the long time-exposure the red, amber and green lights have registered on the film to say stop, ready, go. There is a light mist settling on the cityscape which can be seen around the intense of the street lighting giving the scene a futuristic atmosphere like the Blade Runner movie. Apart from the prime colours (colors) emitted by the traffic lights, the image has an otherwise green hue including the tree foliage which is illuminated by the artificial lamps. The leaves are also blurring because of a faint breeze which registers during a long time-exposure.

  • It is dusk and the evening light is fast-disappearing behind the buildings of Westminster, London. Seen from the south bank of the River Thames and looking over Westminster Bridge, traffic lights trail and the light fades over the Palace of Westminster and the tall clock tower of Big Ben, London England. Street lights flare intensively during the long-exposure and there is enough ambient light to see the reflections on the river's water. The Palace, also known as the Houses of Parliament or Westminster Palace, is where the two Houses of the Parliament of the United Kingdom (the House of Lords and the House of Commons) conduct their business. It is therefore a potent symbol for British Governmental power, influence and a world-famous landmark for tourists. Big Ben is the name of the clock's bell and not the tower itself.

  • Looking through the large windows of Greater London Mayor (GLA) Ken Livingstone's headquarters on the River Thames, a lone figure stands silhouetted with a floodlit Tower Bridge in the background. We see the reflections of the GLA building pasted over the evening sky above Tower Bridge. London's famous bridge was completed in 1894 and remains one of the capital's most visible symbols both for Victorian engineering and as a tourist landmark. The Mayor's Greater London Authority (GLA) headquarters stands over the Thames, opposite the Tower of London on the north shore.

This a regular activity as it requires the riders to perfect their horse riding skills and maneuvers for their official duties at ceremonial events. The PBG is the Indian Army's preeminent regiment founded in 1773 during the British occupation, this handpicked unit began with a mere 50 men and today stands at 160 soldiers plus 50 support staff. It has a dual role, both as a ceremonial guard for the President of India, with all its finery at important state functions, as well as an elite operational unit for the Indian Army which has seen action in many battle fronts, in particular the on going disputed region of Kashmir.
