  • Young women on a shop hoarding with pedestrians and an elderly couple about to cross Brutoin Street in central London. An image of young and older generations is seen at this busy crossing where young women stand to one side, out for a shopping trip along the fashionable and expensive Bond Street. To their left is an elderly couple who stand separated by a wide distance from the girls - a metaphor for the wide generation gap in Britain today. The young girls live in an age of materialism and wealth while the people from their grandparents' era have survived unanticipated hardship, war and technological changes. In the background are the faces and poses of fashion models whose androgynous looks are as different to the elderly as the females along the street.

  • A cloaked guide stands surrounded by a younger generation in beachwear, on a poster background in Burlington Arcade in central London. Standing still in the cold of a winter's day, the man is dressed in his dark and heavy cloak that helps keep him warm. But as the antithesis of winter days we see the summertime representted by the young people in summer swimming costumes, enjoying the warmth of a coastal pool, showing off the health and beauty of youth. It is a picture of generations, of seasons and wealth.

  • Mo Suo minority people in a small community village home near Lugu Lake, Yunnan, China. Leaders of such communities are women, who live mostly separate lives from the men of the village. They still lead very simple lives, tending their crops and animals. Local tradition is that if a man wished to be with any woman in the village, he must simply knock on her door at night. Should she become pregnant with his child, the man’s brothers would have to raise the child. Here a Mo Suo woman who leads a more modern life, working in a nearby hotel sits with three generations of one family.

  • Crowds wave Union Jack flags below the lions of Buckingham Palace's Victoria Memorial during 50th anniversary celebrations of wartime VE day. With medals glinting in the sunshine, the married man and woman stand together representing the generations of survivors of those who lived during the terrible years of warfare. Here they celebrate the 50th anniversary of VE (Victory in Europe) Day on 6th May 1995. In the week near the anniversary date of May 8, 1945, when the World War II Allies formally accepted the unconditional surrender of the armed forces of Germany and peace was announced to tumultuous crowds across European cities, the British still go out of their way to honour those sacrificed and the realisation that peace was once again achieved. Street parties now – as they did in 1945 – played a large part in the country’s patriotic well-being.

  • Two elderly ladies push near-identical trolleys past a womens' clothes shop in Chelsea. Helping them walk, they lean on the handles of these shopping accessories as they make their unsteady way along the trendy shopping street in West London. In the window of the fashion store is a large poster of a beautiful model, as if reminding them of their own youth and beauty. We see a scene of ageism and the passing of time, of generations of women starting young lives and passing into old age, needing to be aided with supports.

  • Two generations of seaside visitors sit on the sea wall of the Portuguese Riviera, on 12th July 2016, at Cascais, near Lisbon, Portugal. Cascais is a coastal town and a municipality in Portugal, 30 kilometres 19 miles west of Lisbon. The former fishing village gained fame as a resort for Portugals royal family in the late 19th century and early 20th century. • Making their way across a snow-swept road in Norwood, south London, an elderly couple tread warily as the snow turns to slush. It's a bleak, raw morning as the new snowfall has settled on this suburban street where cars are parked on icy kerbs. Wearing sensible hats and coats and non-slip boots the pensioners are vulnerable to icy black spots which may endanger their stability because old people are susceptible to falls and injury at these hazardous times. A very monochrome landscape, we see little colour. Instead it is a scene of jeopardy and of an uncaring society for its older generations.

  • 3 generations of Hmong women make textile products in Ban Kok Wa village to sell at the Luang Prabang night market, Lao PDR.The Hmong have recently settled in the town of Luang Prabang - a consequence of the government’s efforts to suppress both the cultivation of opium poppies and slash and burn agriculture, which they have traditionally practiced, and of their own desire to take advantage of the expansion of tourism, which provides an important outlet for their crafts. These women have developed an artisanal textile industry based on their remarkable heritage. Using their skilful embroidering and combining the sophisticated, colourful motifs that have traditionally adorned their clothing they have created aprons, tablecloths, cushion and bed covers, slippers and more which they sell to tourists at the Luang Prabang night market.

  • Families rest before the start of the canoe slalom heats at the Lee Valley White Water Centre, north east London, on day 3 of the London 2012 Olympic Games. The slogan 'Inspire a Generation' is written on a London 2012 banner asking Britons to help encourage and influence the next generation of young people into sport, to promote health and confidence in times of economic austerity plus poor health and diet.

  • The words Inspire a Generation for the main Olympic slogan on a sign in the Olympic Park during the London 2012 Olympics. Stretched across a bridge near the Riverbank Arena where the Hockey games are played, the British Olympic organisation (LOCOG) hope that as the tally for gold medals climbed, British youth will be inspired enough to take up sport when declining spending and interest has been a national issue. In times of austerity, schools and sports clubs had their budgets for sport reduced and Team GB's success raised more concerns for the future of British youth as potential medal winners.

  • Two young men dressed in office suits casually stuff their lunches during a hot lunchtime break in the Broadgate Estate in the City of London. Both with legs across knees, the lads in their 20s sit on a bench beneath a tree alongside the statue of a traditional gardener, slightly bent and equipped with hoe and wearing a wastecoat, hobnailed boots and flat cap, an iconic salt-of-the-earth workman. This scene suggests the social divisions of the working man: Of the young, educated post-war generation whose opportunities have afforded them a faster lifestyle, far removed from that of the physically-exhausted man whose life has been spent working the honest land. The English social divide is clearly represented here as the harshness of the manual labourer versus the youth of today, seen in the middle of the modern city.

  • As a young office worker sleeps incongruously on a marble pavement, a street sweeper nearby brushes away litter with a small dustpan. The manual labourer wears blue overalls, yellow gloves and keys in his back pocket while the man in a wastecoat and smart trousers and polished slip-on shoes appears to be fast asleep, his fingers across his chest. This scene suggests the social divisions of the working man: Of the young, educated post-war generation whose opportunities have afforded them a faster lifestyle, far removed from that of the physically-demanding job of a man whose life has been spent cleaning and sweeping. English social differences is clearly represented here as the harshness of the manual labourer versus a lazy youth of today, seen in the middle of the modern city.

Together they lean against a stone wall of a road above and look down the hill of their street they may have lived all their lives. In the distance, a younger generation of young girls play at the far end. The men might once have been working men, old coal miners like many folk in this community whose population rose steeply during the period of (now defunct) mining development in South Wales, being 10,846 in 1891 and 21,945 ten years later. church wall in the city centre. A mother and child sit on a bench below the names of those local men lost in the first war (AD1914-18) - the 200 names tell a story of the lost generation of youth, now replaced by the modern Brit, unused to self-sacrifice and loss on an unimaginable scale. The church is medieval, renowned for its perpendicular porch, fan vaults and merchants' tombs. The chancel is the oldest part of the church. Construction started around 1115.

The generation gap is shown here with the older people unconscious after a day in sea air while the lad with the energy of youth puts much effort into shovelling sand from the growing hole. If they are related, they are oblivious as to the dangers of excavating holes on tidal beaches.

  • Across the calm waters of a Scottish bay, isolated houses and crofts sit before the dramatic Cuillin Mountains that rise up in the distance on the Isle of Skye, Scotland. Sunlight from unusually fine weather spreads across this beautiful landscape seen from the road to Dunvegan, near the hamlet of Harlosh. Farming practices have changed irreversably in a generation and many southerners have English accents rather than that of native Scots islanders as city dwellers from the far south seek an alternative to urban lifestyles. The weather can have adverse effects on those unprepared for such wild conditions, especially during harsh winters when violent storms batter these Atlantic coasts. But old crofts have been converted to bed and breakfast homes, catering for tourist visitors who adore this form of idyllic escapism.
