  • Peering comically over a hedgerow, a Guernsey cow looks on in a field on the small British-owned Channel Island. Renowned for the rich flavour of its milk, as well as its hardiness and docile disposition descended from two breeds brought over from nearby France (Isigny cattle from Normandy and the Froment du Léon from Brittany) the 450 to 500 kg Guernsey produces around 6,000 litres per cow per year. Its milk has a golden colour due to an exceptionally high content of beta carotene, a source of Vitamin A, which helps reduce the risks of certain cancers. The milk also has a high butterfat content of 5% and a high protein content of 3.7% making it deliciously creamy. The island of Guernsey is divided into ten parishes and along with its larger and more commercial Jersey, is situated in the warm English Channel, nearer to French than the English coast.

  • A motorbike carrying churns of milk passes a bull mounting a cow on 20th January 2018 in the city of Udaipur, India. One Hindu goddess, Bhoomi, is usually shown in the form of a cow. She represents the Earth. Most Hindus respect cows for their gentle nature, and cows also represent strength. Hindus, however, are vegetarians and they consider the cow to be a sacred symbol of life that should be protected and revered. In the Vedas, the oldest of the Hindu scriptures, the cow is associated with Aditi, the mother of all the gods.

  • Alpine brown cows graze in sunlit winter pasture on Inglebert Seger's Vaduz farm on the Liechtenstein valley floor. The nearest cow looks towards the viewer while the second is further away in the field of fresh green winter grass. Brown Swiss is the breed of dairy cattle that produces the second largest quantity of milk per annum, over 9,000 kg (20,000 lb). The milk contains on average 4% butterfat and 3.5% protein, making their milk excellent for production of cheese. Known mostly as a tax haven, much of Liechtenstein's terrain is mountainous, making it a winter sports destination. Many cultivated fields and small farms characterize its landscape both in the south (Oberland, upper land) and in the north (Unterland, lower land).

  • The Dun Cow Surgery health centre on the Old Kent Road on 24th March 2022 in London, United Kingdom. Old Kent Road is a major thoroughfare in South East London passing through the Borough of Southwark. It was originally part of an ancient trackway that was paved by the Romans. It is now part of the A2, a major road from London to the South East coast. Nowadays the surroundings have a run down feel, and while there are many new housing developments, it has a very strong old East End atmosphere, with the more modern twist of a very multicultural population.

  • Female vet, Diana Stapleton is ecstatically happy after successfully delivering twin calves to Fresian cow at Manor House Farm, Barnoldswick near Settle, North Yorkshire, England. With the two youngsters spread on the soft straw of the barn, and their mother facing the corner of the outhouse with the resulting afterbirth still attached, Diana makes her sense of achievement clear to the farmer who must also be relived about the positive outcome. The survival of twin cattle births depends on thorough training and an instinct for animal husbandry and medical requirements. Diana Stapleton belonged to the Dalehead Veterinary Group based in nearby Settle for 15 years, covering a 20-mile area of 500 remote farms though she specialised in small animals and farmwork before dying suddenly at the age of 39.
