  • Ostrich farmer Robert Bailey with some of his self-reared birds and one of their giant eggs on his farm near Chepstow, Wales. Surrounded by the tall-headed ostriches, he holds the egg to show a female bird, which obligingly looks down at the white shell. Rearing these birds is a specialist and very expensive business but Ostrich meat is a South African delicacy, used for Biltong. Ostriches lay an egg every other day, of which 40 to 80% are fertile. In the wild there is a 95% failure rate but using an incubator almost guarantees total success. Its latin name, 'Struthio camelus', is the largest of living birds with some males reaching a height of 8 ft (244 cm) and weighing 200 to 300 lb (90-135 kg). In the wild, the polygamous male has from two to six females in his flock. The cock scoops out a hollow for the eggs, which weigh nearly 3 lb (1.35 kg) each.

  • After the week shooting ducks and upland game birds, the haul of dead birds is hanging and the hunters have the job of cleaning, plucking, skinning, dividing and generally processing the birds for their freezers, near Minot, North Dakota, United States. This is a strong smelling and gruesome job, but an important part of the process of gaining your own wild meat. Here the birds have been hanging for anything from a day to a week.

  • Bird fanciers admire caged tropical birds in the Grand Place Grote Markt, in Flemish bird market, Brussels, Belgium, on 24th June 1992, in Brussels, Belgium. In the cages are small birds from tropical countries, on sale every Sunday for those wanting avian company in their homes. The Brussels Grand Place hosts this bird market and the selection and prices are generally better than can be found in pet shops though the origins of these creatures are questionable. The Grand Place is Brussels’ main city square, the focal point for colourful events throughout the year. Its Dutch-styled gabled guildhalls date from the 13th century and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

  • Experienced hunters out in the North Dakota prarie grasslands west of Minot, shooting upland game birds such as grouse (also known in this area as 'chickens'). They have been shooting for most of their lives and put considerable efforts into hunting, efforts which reward them with wild game meats, none of which is wasted. This cold wet morning is not ideal for this type of shooting as the birds tend to sit tight in the undergrowth. The hunters on occasion nearly tread on the birds before they will take flight.

  • Hunter Timmy Stein with a pheasant he has just shot near Minot, North Dakota, United States. These beautiful game birds are available to hunt during a specified season. As the birds take flight the hunter will assess quickly whether it is a male or female. A female hen will not be shot, but the numerous male birds, known also as roosters or cocks, are fair game. Only the male birds are open for shooting as if allowed to live longer, they become aggressive to the hens, often pecking them to death. Hunters work the land to find pheasant and grouse with their faithful gun dogs. These men have been shooting for most of their lives and put considerable efforts into their hunting, efforts which reward them with wild game meats, none of which is wasted.

  • Located about 90 minutes by boat from Krabi Town, Phi Phi Ley, the smaller of the Phi Phi Islands contains a large cave, Tham Phraya Nak or The Viking Cave. The cave is home to vast numbers of swifts. Their nests, an essential ingredient in the Chinese gourmet dish Birds Nest soup, are collected by locals from a series of rickety bamboo ladders. It was once possible to enter this cave but now, due to the precious nature of the birds nests, this is impossible. These special nests command prices which makes them more valuable than gold.

  • Bird theme construction theme hoarding in central London. During the renovation of this large building on the western end of Leicester Square, developers have designed the hoarding to reflect pigeon population long residing in this quarter of inner London. Although the feeding of birds is nowadays discouraged, tourists still drop crumbs and so pigeons still thrive, though not in the previous numbers of years ago.

  • Shotguns broken over their arms, hunters John Davidson and Byron Grubb assess the land while upland game bird hunting near Minot, North Dakota, United States. Both hunters work the land to find pheasant and grouse with their faithful Black Labradors Annie and Danny respectively. These trained working dogs watch the bird as it comes down and run to collect and bring them back. This breed of dogs has a soft mouth which means they can pick up the birds and return them without damaging them. These men have been shooting for most of their lives and put considerable efforts into their hunting, efforts which reward them with wild game meats, none of which is wasted.

  • Examples of bird wildlife to be found after the extensive conservation project at Barton Broad in the Norfolk Broads. The information board shows us the species and kinds of birdlife thriving in this wetland, a region of east Anglia known for its important natural habitats after decades of neglect. Birds such as Coot, Mallard, Moorhen, Tern and Grebe are all surviving thanks to investment and a commitment to protect native species. Barton Broad is the largest Broad in the Ant Valley. It is a man-made landscape impacted by natural processes - the open water is a result of flooded peat diggings. The fen habitat around Barton Broad contributes to the largest fenland expanse in the UK and contains rare vegetation.
