The Grand Place is Brussels’ main city square, the focal point for colourful events throughout the year. Its Dutch-styled gabled guildhalls date from the 13th century and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

  • Hidden in a wooden hut, a group of bird-spotting ornithologists peer through binoculars at the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) rreserve at Rainham Marshes, Essex England. Watching dozens of wintering birds, the group are intensely looking through their optical equipment in anticipation of seeing rare breeds at this Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), a wetland alongside the River Thames, 20 miles from Central London. A narrow slit is open to keep them hidden from sight so leaning on elbows and with a guide sheet in front to identify particular species, they concentrate on their hobby. The RSPB has 200 nature reserves covering almost 130,000 hectares, home to 80% of Britain's rarest or most threatened bird species. Its role is to speak out for birds and wildlife, tackling the problems that threaten the environment.

  • After the week shooting ducks and upland game birds in North Dakota, the hunters have the job of cleaning, plucking, skinning, dividing and generally processing the birds into a state ready to cook. This is a strong smelling and gruesome job, but an important part of the process of gaining your own wild meat. Here Timmy Stein uses an electric bird plucker which also vacuums up the feathers.

  • The image of the artwork called Big Bird by the Belgian artist Roa is seen on the side of a Balti restaurant in Hanbury Street, off Brick Lane, East London. Painted in 8 hours on the Victorian brick, the work has become a known landmark on this and surrounding streets where little known artists as well as Roa and Banksy have adorned walls and doorways. ROA (born c. 1975) is the pseudonym of an anonymous graffiti artist from Ghent, Belgium who has created works on the streets of cities across Europe and the United States. ROA generally paints wild animals (such as rats) or birds (such as crows) in black and white. In 2010 ROA came to particular notice in the UK when Hackney council threatened to paint over one of his paintings, a 3.5m high rabbit.

The ancient sport of Falconry has become today’s humane pest control of choice, particularly as costs falls. Once a pigeon population has been scared away, it requires only a token hawk presence to keep it away. Van Vynck Bird Control is a specialist company providing over 25 years, a range of environmental services dealing with nuisance bird management. They are pioneers of specialist techniques such as the use of predatory species (such as falconry) to displace and interrupt behavioural patterns as well as offering a complete range of physical deterrents. • A bird's nest (used for home decoration) for sale at the roadside market in the Tai Dam village of Ban Na Mor, Oudomxay province, Lao PDR. In the past the bulk of products collected or caught from the wild were used for family consumption, but nowadays a substantial proportion of products are sold in the markets for cash. Ban Na Mor market is ideally situated on route 13 which goes to the border with China allowing them to take advantage of the many Chinese tour buses and businessmen passing through.

  • A young Akha Pouli boy from Ban Picherkao with a bird he has caught with a trap, Phongsaly province, Lao PDR. For families living away from the main roads and markets, food caught or collected from the wild, especially edible plants and small animals still make up fifty per cent of their diet. Nature’s bounty in providing for the Lao may be plentiful, but this does not mean that the task of growing and finding enough food for family subsistence and maintenance is easy. It is a major preoccupation of rural families and takes the bulk of time and energy of every man, woman and child.

  • A tame Barn Owl rests on its perch at the quiet Lord Nelson pub in Reedham on the Norfolk Broads. Rescued from a former owner and now taking up residence in this country inn, the bird (whose species is tyto alba) peers suspiciously at anyone who cares to bring a drink nearby although a stroke along its fine feathers is not recommended.

  • Pedestrians walk around a mangled, headless, pigeon lies on the pavement on London's Piccadily. The gory corpse of the bird that has somehow been torn apart lies on the street for pedestrians to avoid as they pass-by near Bond Street. Its wing is splayed out in the shadows and a single foot sticks out in sunlight, the end of an existence on London's buildings, looking for scraps and crumbs.

  • An aerial detail of a dead pigeon, seemingly in a peaceful sleep in a City of London street. With wings neatly folded, the bird lies on the dirty ground against the wall of a bus stop shelter in the heart of capital's financial district (founded by the Romans in the 1st Century). A small patch of blood is on the pavement and is the only clue of the pigeon's demise.

  • Lone pigeon perched on a girder on the underside of a railway bridge in south London. Seen from the top deck of a London bus, we see the lone bird with its head poking out from its steel nest, the strip light from the bus' interior make a diagonal line across the scene. The Bridge serves a commuter railway through the capital at Elephant & Castle in Southwark. The girders look weathered from seeping water above and the pigeon's habitat resembled that of an urban tree viewpoint.

  • Experienced hunter Byron Grubb out on the North Dakota prarie grasslands west of Minot, shooting upland game birds such as pheasants (of which one he has shot lays here) and grouse (also known in this area as 'chickens'). Byron has been shooting for most of his life and puts considerable efforts into his hunting, efforts which reward him with wild game meats, none of which is wasted. This cold wet morning is not ideal for this type of shooting as the birds tend to sit tight in the undergrowth. The hunters on occasion nearly tread on the birds before they will take flight.
