  • Warning sign of risk on the western slope of Vesuvius with the urban sprawl of Naples in the distance. The national emergency plan to protect the inhabitants from a possible eruption of the Vesuvius area has as its baseline the explosive event of 1631. Drafted by the scientific community has identified three areas with different hazard defined: the red zone, yellow zone and the blue zone. The red zone is the area immediately surrounding the volcano, and is in greater danger as potentially subject to invasion by pyroclastic flows, From the Introduction page of the book 'Risk Wise: Nine Everyday Adventures' by Polly Morland (Allianz, The School of Life, Profile Books, 2014).

  • Boughs heavy with apricots, grapes, lemons and plums are tinged pink by the setting sun on land owned by Baldassare and Felicia De Simons in the village of Somma Vesuviana, in the Red (evacuation) Zone on the western slope of Vesvius, Somma, Italy. The family have owned this land for generations, the family would choose to stay if the volcano erupts again. "I was born here, I grew up here, I will die here, I've never been afraid here," says Baldassare. But Giuseppe Mastrolorenzo at the Vesuvius Volcano Observatory in Naples adds, "There would be no modern precedent for an evacuation of this magnitude .. This is why Vesuvius is the most dangerous volcano in the world." From the chapter entitled 'Under the Volcano' and from the book 'Risk Wise: Nine Everyday Adventures' by Polly Morland (Allianz, The School of Life, Profile Books, 2015).

  • The Bay of Naples (population 3.7m) seen from the south-western slopes of the Vesuvius Volcano which last erupted in 1944. The national emergency plan to protect the inhabitants from a possible eruption of the Vesuvius area has as its baseline the explosive event of 1631. Drafted by the scientific community has identified three areas with different hazard defined: the red zone, yellow zone and the blue zone. The red zone is the area immediately surrounding the volcano, and is in greater danger as potentially subject to invasion by pyroclastic flows, or mixtures of gases and solids at high temperature which, sliding along the slopes of the volcano at high speed can destroy in a short time everything is on its way. Pyroclastic flows probably will not grow at 360 ° in the neighborhood of the volcano, but will head in one or more preferential directions

  • Seen from St Catherine's Church in the old city of Gdansk, Poland, the famously sprawling shipyard is seen from across the city's old housing and trees. Once known as the Lenin Shipyard but still the largest of its kind in modern Poland. Here in 1980 the union Solidarity (Solidarnosc) was conceived and was partly responsible for a growing dissent against Communist rule, ultimately contributing towards the fall of the Berlin Wall. Lech Walesa started his political career as an electrical technician here, going on to lead Solidarity and then to become President of a democratic Poland. Today Gdansk is a major industrial city and shipping port.

  • Rocinha is the largest favela in South America, located in the wealthy south zone of Rio Janeiro, it is often referred to as a city within a city. Situated directly in between the three wealthiest neighbourhoods in the city, in parts it has spectacular views. During the UPP pacification programme, it did receive a Police station, but this is one of the places that the program has been met with skepticism, drug dealing continues, in some areas young men on the street are armed, and there are sometimes shootouts. Seen here is the water system, consisting of lots of tiny, outdated pipes, providing the water that many rely on every day.

  • As a cyclist pedals his way along a path, a man enjoys late afternoon sunshine in Brockwell Park, Herne Hill, London England. Seen from a central hill in this Victorian-designed open space, there are the terraced housing and larger tenement buildings behind that rise above the tree line in this undulating landscape. The person on the bicycle has been caught between two tree trunks as he approaches the man relaxing on the park bench and another pedestrian is seen further in the distance walking near a red car. It is scene of serenity among the urban sprawl of a capital city, where quiet places are precious and idyllic corners of greenery are highly-sought after. The Brockwell Hall Park Estate was created and landscaped in 1811. It was purchased for the people of Lambeth & Southwark and opened as a public park in 1892 by Lord Rosebery.

This is a very prosperous location for house ownership - near the famous Dulwich Picture Gallery in the heart of the village, an enclave in an otherwise suburban setting surrounded by the urban sprawl. Beneath the centuries old trees we see large family homes in sunshine at the end of summer. Shuttered windows and wooden slatted outer walls plus red brick and terracotta is a popular material in this area and their values are in the millions of Pounds.

  • An aerial view of south London looking from Camberwell towards a commuter train crossing the capital. Transport by rail can ben seen clearly as we look down on to this landscape of urban sprawl in south London: The railway tracks zig-zag through the heart of the borough of Lambeth, near Loughborough Junction, Brixton - showing us how in the late-1800s, the city was sliced through by such rail routes that helped open up the city to the less wealthy - adding to the inner-city. This route is known as the London Bridge (in the east) to Victoria (west) loop that provides a shortcut across the southern regions, from one station to another.

  • Late at night, in a gloomy arrivals gate at Chicago O'Hare airport, a young man sits patiently on his own awaiting the arrival of his girlfriend after a holiday in Asia. It is the last flight to land and a helium balloon floats on a string bearing the words 'Welcome Home', a popular gesture for relatives in airports around the world, each having their own cultural way of showing affection for arriving family members after long absences. The balloon stands still, the only colour amid the drab interior of this sprawling airport hub. Picture from the 'Plane Pictures' project, a celebration of aviation aesthetics and flying culture, 100 years after the Wright brothers first 12 seconds/120 feet powered flight at Kitty Hawk,1903.

  • Air passengers exit and enter a transit train at Chicago O'Hare airport, Illinois USA. They pull suitcases behind them as they negotiate the airport terminal transport system that takes them across the sprawling complex of terminals and tunnels. A large central yellow traffic arrow saying OUT is most prominent telling arriving people to keep in the middle, allowing those departing to enter the carriage from the sides. There is a slight blur to the picture showing the hurrying nature of modern air travel, vastly different from the pioneering days of flight for only the socially elite. • Seen through a glass screen, we see a crowd of passengers - a mixture of business and holiday travellers - awaiting the departure of their commercial flight from Frankfurt am Main international airport, Germany. Reflected lights and other windows merge into this scene of European air travel where the everyday misery of delays and disruption affect millions on a daily basis. Some people are still seated while the more enthusiastic wait in line, queuing for the imminent departure. Frankfurt is also a sprawling hub for the German state airline Lufthansa. • Tree root growing into the stucture of a temple in Preah Khan. Hidden deep in the jungles of Cambodia's Angkor Archaeological Park, Preah Khan is a vast temple complex sprawling across nearly 140 acres. Built by the Khmer king Jayavarman the seventh in the late twelfth century as a monastery and center for learning, it was once the heart of a city of nearly 100,000.<br />
The temple is still largely unrestored: the initial clearing was from 1927 to 1932, and partial anastylosis was carried out in 1939. Since then free-standing statues have been removed for safe-keeping, and there has been further consolidation and restoration work. Throughout, the conservators have attempted to balance restoration and maintenance of the wild condition in which the temple was discovered
