  • With the companionship of a pet dog, an elderly gentleman reminisces about the good old days with a life-long buddy at Alexandra Terrace, in the south Wales town of Abertillery (Welsh: Abertyleri). Together they lean against a stone wall of a road above and look down the hill of their street they may have lived all their lives. In the distance, a younger generation of young girls play at the far end. The men might once have been working men, old coal miners like many folk in this community whose population rose steeply during the period of (now defunct) mining development in South Wales, being 10,846 in 1891 and 21,945 ten years later. Lying in the mountainous mining district of the former counties of Monmouthshire and Glamorganshire, in the valley of the Ebbw Fach..

  • Both wearing slightly ridiculous pairs of glasses, two delegates dance on the floor at the annual Party Conference of 1990 at Blackpool during the premiership of Prime Minister John Major. The dance they are attempting allows them to somehow stretch out their arms to make a theatrical point. The lady is wearing a bare-backed dress with old-fashioned spectacles while her partner wears a formal dinner suit including a black bow tie and with thick-rimmed glasses. They are at this evening event to help raise funds for Britain’s Conservative Party under the leadership of the then PM Major who had just taken over the running of the country from the deposed Margaret Thatcher earlier that year.

  • A mother holds her young son up to show him a paddle steamer on Southend pier in the early nineteen sixties. At the end of the world's longest pier (1 and a quarter miles) the steamer docked for day-trippers to traditionally sail upstream from the Thames estuary at Southend-on-Sea to Gravesend, westward towards London on the River. It is clearly something that this boy sees rarely such is his interest in the small ship full of other holidaymakers.

  • A young man washes the family Ford Anglia car on an Essex estate in the early nineteen sixties. Bending down to wring a leather dry into a bucket the young man cleans his father's beloved Anglia in the street outside the family house which interestingly, is otherwise empty of other cars. This is the new age of car ownership when newfound wealth meant families could afford to buy a vehicle and travel elsewhere after the war years of 1950s austerity. The Ford Anglia is a British car designed and manufactured by Ford in the United Kingdom. The Ford Anglia name was applied to four models of car between 1939 and 1967. 1,594,486 Anglias were produced. The picture was recorded on Kodachrome (Kodak) film in about 1961.

  • A middle-aged 70s husband and wife stand on hotel steps in the Spanish Mediterranean resort of Marbella on the Costa del Sol, southern Spain. Holding his trilby hat in one hand the husband stands slightly higher than his wife, in a more dominant stance than his lady companion. The woman wears a floppy holiday hat in the bright sunshine before an excursion elsewhere.

  • A middle-age mother and father with a teenage son pose for a photo outside their house in a Belgian suburb in the early 70s. Standing rather awkwardly in the street of modern cobbles, the three family members are ready to leave for a day out somewhere and we see their house's window on the left with its shutters lowered. The mother and wife wears white gloves, the husband and father wears a trilby hat - in the way people wore headwear in that bygone era.

  • An older uncle with his two nephews sit on tropical grass in the family African garden in 1970. This amateur family souvenir portrait is a snapshot taken decades before the advent of the digital photograph, preserving the quality of a bygone era. The garden is in the African town of Blantyre in Malawi where this expatriate family lived. This decade is shown with the shorts sandals of seventies childhood.

  • Before they were all replaced as working modes of public transport, a conductor is seen while travelling along a London road, as part of a two-man crew of a number 11 red London bus, England UK. The bus is a traditional design called a Routemaster which has been in service on the capital's roads since 1954 and is nowadays only seen on heritage and tourist routes. From any angle, the bus is easily recognisable as that classic British transport icon. The conductor is the last human link with friendly public travel in London. He is usually a friendly face to accompany unsure travellers, often helping them reach their stop and answering questions about the journey with good humour and kindness. Their removal in favour of single driver crews meant that bus travel became more intimidating.

  • Young adolescent couples kiss and cuddle in a dark corner of a Gatecrashers' Ball in London, England. Three boys and girls dressed in formal evening-wear have been consuming alcohol during the evening and are groping and snogging. • BBC warm-up man Miles Crawford holds up two boards prompting the audience watching the National Lottery Show to Clap or Laugh in BBC Television Centre in West London, England. Lit by studio lighting with a universe of stars in the background, Crawford is a respected and versatile stand-up comic and TV personality in his own right working for the BBC, Sky, Channel 4 and ITV. Ironically, warm-ups perform a preliminary act before a TV show is recorded to literally warm an audience into non-spontaneous laughter to help a comedy's atmosphere - albeit with the help of prompt signs like these. The first National Lottery Live show was at 19:00 on Saturday 19 November 1994.

  • An elderly lady has been accompanied on a seafront walk by her beloved pet Yorkshire terriers. It is a warm late-summer's day in, ironically, the coastal North Yorkshire resort of Scarborough and the lady is wearing her favourite pink cardigan for her afternoon stroll with her pet dogs, both friends and companions. She has paused to sit on a promenade bench, needing a coat or two of paint or varnish, to talk to the animals before continuing home. They are both on their leads and have put their front paws on her legs with equal attention to their proud master and owner.

  • Prime Minster Margaret Thatcher is seen giving a party speech at the 1991 Conservative Party Conference in Blackpool, Lancashire, a full year after being removed by her own colleagues the previous November. Her softer and perhaps pensive expression contrasts with her reputation of the Iron Lady with a gaze that made her opponents uncomfortable. She seems distant here, perhaps recalling her great days in office when she was a powerful figure in world politics. She is wearing the same favourite two-tone blue suit with wide shoulders and a pearl ear-rings as she wore the year before when still in office. The ambient stage lights emphasize the blonde highlights in her hair.

  • Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher is seen dancing with a Tory Party official during the 1990 Conservative Party conference in Blackpool. Thatcher is wearing a favourite black and red ball gown and is the centre of attention for delegates and media. She is seen with Joy, Babs and Teddie - otherwise known as the Beverly Sisters entertainers, the longest surviving vocal group of all time without a change in the line up. The sisters kick their legs up in the air dancing the Charleston (though not in unison) but Mrs Thatcher in her long dress declines and merely stands straight-legged. They are on the dance floor and Tory party officials are enjoying the moment as their PM relishes the moment.

Thatcher is wearing a favourite black and red ball gown and is the centre of attention for delegates and media whose TV lights have lit the dancing couple from the right-hand side. • Margaret Thatcher plays up to the media at a North London school in her own constituency of Finchley during the 1992 general election. Although Thatcher had already resigned as Prime Minister in November 1990, John Major won the ensuing leadership election later that year. Photographers and cameramen surround the former-Prime Minister who is wearing a purple suit and matching broach. She is mid-sentence and has found something amusing to respond to the chants of the media. We see cameras, sound booms and flashes all prepared to photograph this famous statesman including Tom Stoddart who is making eye-contact with the viewer.

  • It’s a free for all as elderly pensioners sift through piles of clothing left outside a community hall at a 1986 jumble sale in the south Wales town of Abergavenney, Monmouthshire. Some hold up items of clothing and others are happy to stand back and watch while some young children descend some steps of this Victorian-era building during a charity event held by the local Lions club, whose volunteers help the elderly and the disadvantaged within their community. Property has been donated and the old folks’ attention is on their finds which are within their price range, having to survive on meagre pensions.
